One of the key things for a successful school is having a strong mission and even stronger values. Your school values are the pillars of the educational environment.

Your values should drive everything you and your teams do – and should be well known and completely understood by the students and staff!

But what are key values that schools should be focused on?

This blog will explain the importance of clear school values and offer advice on great values to stand by, as well as how we can support you with this.

The importance of a clear mission and values in your school

Your school vision, mission and values help to clearly communicate internally what the key beliefs are and what you are all working towards. It helps align all of the staff and students. But also, from an external perspective, it clearly demonstrates to your community what you stand for and the key selling points of your school.

Clarity ensures that all key stakeholders can work together in the same direction – with a focus on growth and development.

What do your values say about your school?

The values your school should try to implement

School values are unique to each workplace – but some good examples could be: resilience, determination, diversity, respect…

Just remember that the values of your school must inspire and elevate students and staff.

Incorporating British Values into your school

The Department of Education published guidance on promoting British Values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.

All schools must now have a clear strategy for these values and show how their work has been effective in instilling them in pupils.

Here are the five British values and how they could fit in with your school values.

British Values

      1. Rule of law

Respect for the rule of law helps to ensure that everyone in society is treated equally and fairly, and that everyone follows the same rules and regulations. This promotes a sense of order and stability in society and helps to prevent crime and other harmful behaviours.

This could include values such as: equality, honesty, truthfulness, inclusion…

        1. Liberty

Individual liberty is another important British value, as it allows people to pursue their own goals and interests, as long as they do not harm others. This value is based on the idea that people should be free to make their own decisions and choices, within the bounds of the law.

This could include values such as: freedom, anti-bullying, determination…

          1. Democracy

Democracy is another key British value, as it is the foundation of the UK’s political system. This value is based on the idea that everyone should have an equal say in how their country is run, and that the government should be accountable to the people.

This could include values such as: respect, peace, expression, accountability…

            1. Respect

Mutual respect is understanding that we all don’t share the same beliefs and values.

This could include values such as: respect, belief, wellbeing, inclusion, difference…

              1. Tolerance

Respecting the values, ideas and beliefs of others whilst not imposing our own on anyone else. It is the foundation for honesty, trust, and meaningful communication.

This could include values such as: acceptance, respect, inclusion…
